Working is one of the primary routes out of poverty and out of homelessness.
The benefits of working are far wider than just financial ones, both for the community as well as the individual. Working can significantly contribute to the recovery and resettlement of an individual, improving their health, self-esteem and social standing. Whilst society benefits from greater social cohesion, a more appropriate use of medical services and prevention of intergenerational worklessness. This event explored how we can increase the number of homeless people who find paid employment.

This webinar enabled local authorities and homelessness agencies to respond to the needs of non-UK European Economic Area (EEA) nationals who are rough sleeping. It provided a summary of the entitlement available and an overview of what a local strategic response should be to best support these individuals.

Homeless Link is campaigning to end homelessness. On the 7th March 2012, we launched the next drive, with a campaign to stop rough sleeping at an event at the Houses of Parliament.
On any one night nearly 1800 people sleep rough. In modern Britain no one should live on the streets. This event showcased the steps that individuals and organisations are taking to help end rough sleeping.
There were speeches from the Minister for Housing and Local Government, The Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP and the Shadow Housing Minister, Jack Dromey MP, as well as from two individuals who have had experience of sleeping rough.

What will the coalition government do to support vulnerable people to be more economically and socially independent?
This event was jointly hosted by Homeless Link and the Crisis Welfare Network; a national programme that is investigating how the Government’s welfare to work strategies are either helping or hindering vulnerable people into employment and/or training.
This event offered an opportunity for agencies from the East of England to look in detail at the changes around welfare reform and DWP Work Programme and to share knowledge of the impact that these are having on the ground.

This free webinar looked at the impact of the changes to the shared accommodation rate on services. The accommodation rate restricts the amount of housing benefit someone can receive because of their age. From the 1 January 2012, the age restriction has been increased from under 25 years to under 35 years.

This free webinar talked delegates through how you can keep your commitment to No Second Night Out and a focus on ending homelessness despite the cuts. The session looked at:
Homeless Link research has shown that cuts to funding are having a negative impact on services for people who are homeless in the UK. The same research indicated that services were expecting further reductions of up to 48% in funding in 2011-2012. This webinar explored how we can continue to support those who are homeless despite these cuts.
