Strategies to survive the cuts

CEOs, Trustees and senior managers of homelessness organisations must think strategically about how they can survive turbulent times and, crucially, continue to reach the people who rely on their services.

According to ACEVO, the new government is looking at encouraging new social business models and private finance to provide non-statutory funding, such as social impact bonds, where private investment is used to prove that a service delivers results, and on results the government will repay the loan. The government may continue to fund some services, but potentially only where a case can be made that the service is a cheaper option to the public purse than the current public sector delivery model.

This section offers resources to senior managers looking to survive the cuts.

RESOURCES IN THIS SECTION

  • Surviving the cuts - an ACEVO guide for CEOs and Trustees
  • Cutswatch - a microsite for the Third Sector developed by ACEVO on all aspects of managing a charity in the context of public spending cuts
  • Managing risk and uncertainty - The New Start Learning Network 'Dealing with Uncertainty' toolkit is aimed at third sector organisations dealing with the current economic challenges. This brand new toolkit, written by Stuart Thompson, provides a detailed and thorough workplan to help you cope with and plan for whatever challenges your organisation may face. It will show you how to structure your organisation and systems to make your organisation more resilient, even when you don’t know the timing or nature of external risks.  The toolkit is being made available to members thanks to Homeless Link’s purchase of a licence.  Members are welcome to distribute it freely within their organisations but not externally.
