Some local authority areas have been particularly successful in tackling rough sleeping. Local authorities, voluntary sector services and other statutory services are working together to reduce the numbers of people sleeping rough. This has been done by developing a range of initiatives and improving access to and configuration of support services.

In summer 2010, Homeless Link talked to key staff in agencies in three local authority areas to find out what is working locally in tackling rough sleeping. Watch the videos of what is happening in Newcastle, Liverpool and Reading, and read more about the work in each area.

All three areas involve multi-agency collaboration and take a case management approach to their work with people sleeping rough. This involves maintaining a clear picture of numbers of people, their background and support needs. Services to meet the needs of individual clients have been configured to help them obtain accommodation and support, and to move away from sleeping rough.
