Introduction to welfare benefits

Understand the benefits system and help clients to claim the most important benefits

This is a practical course, which involves input from the trainer combined with group work. The use of case studies will give you the chance to practice applying you new knowledge. Comprehensive course handouts will be provided to help you share learning with your colleagues.

what will you learn? 

On completion of this course you will:

  • recognise the differences between the different groups of benefits (such as means-tested, contributory, and universal benefits)
  • know which benefit is which, and understand who can claim each benefit
  • understand who can claim Income Support
  • understand who can claim Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • calculate Income Support/Jobseeker’s Allowance (IB) and check that all the appropriate premiums are being awarded
  • know which offices claimants should contact to claim specific benefits
  • be aware of the time limits for challenging decisions, and the importance of acting in time.
