Homeless Link backs MPs’ call for urgent Government homelessness strategy

Thursday, 18 August 2016 - 10:23am

We respond to the Communities and Local Government Select Committee’s homelessness report, published on 18th August.

Homeless Link welcomes the Communities and Local Government Committee report and its emphasis on the urgent need for a renewed cross-Departmental homelessness strategy.

Our organisation was involved in giving evidence to the Committee’s inquiry and we strongly support many of the Committee’s recommendations. While there are one or two elements we suggest need re-evaluation, we especially welcome their call for more effective legislation, immediate removal of Local Housing Allowance caps from supported housing, increased tenant choice around housing benefits being paid to landlords and greater flexibility in the way individuals with multiple needs can receive help.

Homeless Link's Chief Executive, Rick Henderson, commented:

“It is high time that the Government once again gives homelessness the attention that it needs. The Committee ‘found that homelessness is undoubtedly increasing’, and this assertion, sadly, reflects the experience of Homeless Link members who have seen large uplifts in demand for their services over recent years.

“Crucially, the Committee recommends an urgent cross-Departmental strategy. This is something Homeless Link has been calling for. Homelessness cannot just be seen as a problem for one or two parts of Government, but needs a truly joined-up approach.

“Homeless Link and our members are keen to assist the Government in the delivery of the Committee’s key recommendations. We call upon them to act without delay to put in place the necessary leadership and resources to make the recommendations a reality. The report must not be allowed to gather dust; the clock is ticking for many people at risk of or currently experiencing homelessness.”
