Working with people with mental health needs can be challenging, and accessing the right support is key to ensuring that their needs are met. Unfortunately it can be complex and difficult to navigate the system so that the client gets the help they need, and you get the advice and support you need to continue working with them effectively.

This course is designed to help you understand how mental health problems can present, and how mental health services work, so that you can more easily ensure that you get the right help for your client.

Who is this course for?

Managers and frontline staff from any homeless service

What will you learn?

This course will explore:

  • the main symptoms of the most common mental health problems
  • how external factors, such as substance misuse, may impact on presentation
  • how mental health problems are assessed
  • how to help people who are in distress
  • how mental health services are organised according to need and risk levels
  • when hospital admission is appropriate, and the routes to manage this
  • how to refer to mental health services to ensure the best response
  • why referrals may be rejected, and why this isn’t always a problem.

How is the course organised?

The course is split into three sections:

  • mental health problems, their presentations, and how to help.
  • how services are structured, and how to refer.
  • case studies with group work, time to discuss your own cases, and time for your questions.
