Professional Boundaries

Tuesday, 9 March 2021
Online | 10.30am-12.00pm

Staff can be faced with dilemmas and can sometimes find themselves in tricky situations, where they are uncertain of the most appropriate course of action. This course will enable participants to explore these critical issues.

In some cases, perhaps a line has been crossed in terms of acceptable professional practice or there has been an allegation that a code of conduct has been breached.

By reflecting on these situations, staff and their managers can adopt good practice strategies to ensure staff work within professional boundary guidelines and adhere to policies and codes of conduct.

Who is this course for?

Frontline staff and managers within homelessness and supported housing settings.

What will you learn?

By the end of the course participants will have:

  • Reflected on their own experiences of, and perspectives on, managing professional boundaries
  • Explored the reasons why we need boundaries, why we might sometimes cross them and the potential consequences of a boundary crossing
  • Reflected on a number of real life ‘boundary’ scenarios and established ways of managing them
  • Discussed and agreed good practice guidelines and appropriate policies, procedures and codes to manage professional boundaries.

Module one

  • Experiences - participants are encouraged to reflect on any boundary issues or concerns they have, or have had.
  • What is a boundary? Meanings and interpretations and the difference between a boundary violation and a crossing.
  • Why do we need boundaries? Clarity on the need for safe working and other good practice issues.
  • Personal v Professional boundaries? Exploring differences and how personal and professional boundaries can become confused.
  • Setting standards Common standards, codes and organisational policy and procedures.

Module two

  • Questionnaire - short scenarios that are typical examples of boundary dilemmas. Participants are asked to state their reactions to these which are then discussed more widely.
  • Case-studies – more detailed actual examples of boundary crossings that require discussion and proposed ways of managing in small groups.
  • A simple RAG model of professional boundaries and explore safe boundaries, boundary violations and boundary crossings.
  • Reflective practice to maintain boundaries.

Module three

  • Getting help and support – a look at boundary risks and sources of help and support.
  • Risk Assessment – As a boundary tool.
  • Exploring non-client focused boundaries - (staff, partners…)
  • Feedback and professional boundaries – Looking at a key communication process to maintain professional boundaries.
