The letter, which was coordinated by Shelter and signed by national housing and homelessness organisations including Centrepoint, Generation Rent and St Mungo's, made the point that "it is now almost impossible to find a home for renters relying on housing benefit, with 49 out of 50 advertised private lets unaffordable."

The letter went on to say that "keeping housing benefit frozen is regrettably driving homelessness up." Before concluding that the Government "cannot wait until the Autumn Statement to put this right."
