We asked the team about their work:
"LAWA is a specialist by-and-for organisation with almost 4 decades of experience supporting Latin American and other Global Majority women and children fleeing gender-based violence, particularly domestic abuse. We work with women facing multiple and intersecting barriers, including insecure immigration status, financial hardship, housing insecurity and homelessness, providing culturally responsive and intersectional support that promotes safety, self-determination and long-term stability.
We run the only refuge accommodation in the UK by and for Latin American women, providing safe accommodation and specialist support for survivors and their children who have nowhere else to turn. Alongside our refuge provision, we offer specialist housing and immigration advice, advocacy, counselling and community support, helping women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to access safe housing, recover from trauma, and rebuild their lives free from violence. We also lead Women Against Homelessness and Abuse (WAHA), an initiative focused on tackling the intersection of housing insecurity and domestic abuse. Grounded in our frontline work, we advocate for policy and systems change to improve housing rights and access to safety for Global Majority survivors."
