Does your service help alleviate food poverty?
Join our online session on 16th March and make your voice heard to the UK Right to Food Commission.
Giving food is often one of the first steps in supporting people experiencing homelessness. Whether you’re a day centre providing breakfasts, a soup run going out with hot meals, or a hostel with cooking facilities, so much of the work we do is about making sure people have something to eat.
But we also know the challenges of providing healthy, nutrient dense meals and in making food support sustainable at a time of growing need. This is why we are partnering with the Parliamentary Right to Food UK Commission, led by Ian Byrne, for a one-off online workshop on 16th March to discuss what the right to food means in our services.
What is the Right to Food Commission?
The Commission’s stated purpose is: “to gather evidence, amplify lived experience, and develop clear, practical recommendations for embedding the right to food in law, policy and practice across the four nations and regions of the UK.
“The Commission will focus on:
- Understanding the root causes of food insecurity, including poverty, social security, and structural inequality
- Examining how the right to food can be implemented in line with international human rights standards
- Setting out a roadmap for the changes needed at local and national level to implement a statutory Right to Food so that everyone can access adequate, nutritious and culturally appropriate food with dignity by 2035.”
You can learn more about the commission on their website.
Who should get involved?
Anybody whose work relates to food poverty is welcome to join, such as those working with people experiencing food poverty or anybody working in a homelessness setting where food is prepared or served. This includes outreach, day centres, and accommodation services with kitchen facilities or meal services even if you do not provide the food yourself.
What should I expect?
The session will be attended by commissioners from the Right to Food Commission who want to hear from you directly about the connections between food, hunger and homelessness. This will be an interactive session so please come along prepared to talk.
The session is scheduled for 2.30pm-4pm on Monday 16th March 2026. You can sign up at on Eventbrite by clicking this link.
If you cannot make this time, the commission is also accepting written evidence which you can submit using this link.
