LGBTQ+ people are disproportionately affected by homelessness and can face multiple barriers when it comes to accessing support from mainstream homelessness services. A huge number of LGBTQ+ people end up homeless due to being rejected by their families after coming out. This can lead to difficulties in accessing statutory homelessness support with familial abuse not being taken seriously despite individuals not feeling safe to remain living in their homes. LGBTQ+ people may also face barriers when accessing voluntary sector services, with services failing to meet the specific needs of individuals in this community, and not being overtly inclusive.
In Episode 2 of this series of the Going Beyond podcast, we speak to Thai O’Reilly (he/him), Senior Practitioner for the Advice and Advocacy team at Stonewall Housing. We discuss the barriers LGBTQ+ people face in accessing homelessness support, including statutory housing, emergency accommodation, and voluntary sector support.
