On 11/10/2022 The Times reported that Government Ministers are “discussing shelving legislation … to ban no fault evictions”, with a Government source labelling the reform as “not a priority.”
Responding to the story, Rick Henderson, CEO at Homeless Link, the national membership charity for frontline homelessness organisations, said:
“Everyone deserves a safe place to live and the support they need to maintain it. But the growing numbers forced to rent privately are constantly at risk of eviction through no fault of their own. This lack of protection, coupled with soaring rents, has made evictions from the private rented sector one of the biggest drivers of homelessness in the past decade.
“Therefore, if the reports today are true, shelving rental reform will be devastating for households across the country. At a time when bills are rising at unprecedented rates, people need extra protection and the security of knowing they can’t be evicted on a whim.
“The Government first promised to end no fault evictions in 2019. Since then, tens of thousands of people have been threatened with homelessness in this way. I hope it listens to the range of organisations who feel betrayed by this news and presses ahead with the reforms it has been promising for years.”
