Homeless Link welcomes Steve Reed to his new role as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Reed picks up the role from his predecessor Angela Rayner, who resigned on 5 September. His appointment comes at a key moment, with a new Homelessness Strategy expected in the coming months, incoming regulations on supported accommodation, and record levels of people experiencing homelessness.

Welcoming Steve Reed to the role, Homeless Link CEO Rick Henderson commented:

“We look forward to working with Steve Reed, and thank his predecessor Angela Rayner for all her efforts to tackle the homelessness emergency. Considerable work remains to be done, but the commitment to build more social homes is one vital element of a future free from homelessness – and a commitment we need to see delivered.”

“With strong leadership from the new Secretary of State, this government can still make good on its promise to get back on track to ending homelessness. The upcoming Homelessness Strategy provides a unique opportunity to break out of the cycle of crisis that has led to record levels of homelessness, and homelessness services pushed to the brink of collapse due to financial pressures.”

“That strategy though can only be successful with full and informed input from organisations working on the frontline of homelessness support and prevention every day. Homeless Link and our 750+ members stand ready to provide that insight, and look forward to discussing the opportunities for real change with the new Secretary of State soon.”
