Some benefits, including Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) are ending, and being replaced by Universal Credit (UC). Individuals who are currently receiving ESA will not be moved to UC automatically, but will have to make a claim, otherwise their benefits will be stopped.

The application process

  • Individuals should receive a ‘Migration Notice Letter’ from the DWP which contains all the information they will need to move to UC. It is important that individuals make a claim to UC by their Migration Notice Letter deadline. Please note, individuals should not make a claim to UC until they have received their Migration Notice Letter.
  • If an individual has not received a letter (or they may not have access to their correspondence address), they should ring the ‘Move to Universal Credit helpline’ (0800 169 0328) to ask for support to make a digital claim. Alternatively, individuals can attend a job centre or get help from a support worker or charity.

More information and support can be found at: Move to Universal Credit if you get a Migration Notice letter.

A one-page flyer can be downloaded below which contains all the key ‘Move to Universal Credit’ information. It is important that people working in frontline homelessness services are aware of this information so they can support individuals who may need to move over to UC.
