We're delighted to welcome Emmaus Village Carlton as a new member of Homeless Link!
Emmaus Village Carlton supports up to 42 people with experience of homelessness by giving them a home and meaningful work opportunities in its social enterprises of three shops and a bistro. The charity aims to give individuals who have experienced homelessness an opportunity to regain lost self-esteem and help rebuild their lives. It also has some additional move-on rooms for people preparing to live independently.
Across the UK, there are currently 30 Emmaus communities, supporting more than 850 people with experience of homelessness in the UK. In addition, there are three Emmaus groups, all of which are working towards setting up an Emmaus community in their area.
Social enterprise is central to the Emmaus model as it aims to provide meaningful work opportunities to people who have experienced homelessness and social exclusion, as well as generating funding to maintain communities. People living in Emmaus communities are expected to sign off all benefits, with the exception of housing benefit, which is used to help to support the community. The rest of the funding that is needed is generated through the social enterprise and fundraising.
