As LGBTQ+ history month kicks off, our final episode of our latest Going Beyond podcast series with Stonewall Housing has been released today. In previous episodes, we have heard how LGBTQ+ people are disproportionately affected by homelessness, and individuals often face multiple barriers to support. We know that funding is needed for more LGBTQ+ specialist services but there are so many ways that mainstream homelessness services can be more inclusive and cater to LGBTQ+ people’s needs.
In this episode, we speak to Alex Duffy (she/her), Training Lead at Stonewall Housing. Alex shares practical tips on how mainstream homelessness services can signal their inclusivity to LGBTQ+ people, including how to create a welcoming safe environment, the importance of language and providing opportunities for people to talk about their needs. We speak about the value of listening to LGBTQ+ voices when designing services, and the necessity of reviewing policies to allow for diversity.
