Confidential peer support
Through answering thought-provoking questions, Action Learning Sets allow you to consider your challenges from new and diverse viewpoints, leading to tangible actions.
The independence, objectivity and confidentiality of these sessions provides staff with a space to share with one another while receiving emotional and practical support.
What is action learning?
An Action Learning Set (ALS) is a structured format of peer support with a facilitator, taking place at regular intervals with the same people attending each time.
The purpose of the ALS is to focus on work challenges and learn from the process. Members present and explore live work issues in turn with support from other members in a facilitated and safe environment.
How does an action learning set work?
One person has uninterrupted time to share a challenge. Group members ask insightful questions which help the presenter to consider the challenge from new perspectives. The presenter responds and reflects. After the questioning, the presenter commits to action and each set member shares their reflections and takeaways. At the next action-learning set, the presenter gives an update on their challenge and how their action worked out for them.
Action Learning Set Facilitators
All our facilitators are qualified ALS practitioners, experienced in delivering Action Learning Sets to staff in the sector.

How do ALS differ to other collective learning such as group coaching, reflective practice or communities of practice?
It is the specific process which distinguishes ALS from other forms of collective learning. While communities of practice also bring together peers with a common interest, and reflective practice also enables a safe space for reflection, neither includes the unique methodology whereby an individual comes to their own solution and actions following insightful questions from others.
Group coaching, while also using insightful questions, relies on one person, the “coach” to ask the questions and illicit learning. In action learning, all set members are “coaches”, each bringing their own unique perspective, expertise and experience.
