This course will provide an introduction to the these topics and will explore ways of supporting people and maintaining staff wellbeing.

Who is this course for?

This course is most suitable for workers in frontline services who have received some basic mental health and/or substance misuse training or have some experience of working with these client groups.

What will you learn?

Programme:

  • Defining and understanding Complex Needs, Dual Diagnosis and Personality Disorder clusters
  • Whose responsibility? What services and sources of support are there?
  • Different approaches to support and how they interrelate
  • The cycle of change 
  • Introduction to Motivational Interviewing
  • Trauma-Informed Principles and Benefits
  • Worker wellbeing and support.

Module one

This module introduces the definitions of Complex Need, Dual Diagnosis and Personality Disorder. It will give an overview of common mental health issues and the impact of substances on the individual and their treatment. It will explore Personality Disorder and the most commonly diagnosed disorders for this client group.

Module two

This module looks at current treatment and support in the community and in services. It will give an overview of Motivational Interviewing in dual diagnosis, and trauma-informed principles of working with this client group. It looks at the cycle of change in the dual diagnosis approach and will explore different ways of supporting this client group.

Module three

This module will cover an individual and service response to this client group. It will explore tips for supporting clients and will look at professional boundaries in the context of supporting someone with complex needs. It will also look at self-care for workers, exploring supervision and reflective practice benefits in this type of support. It also covers best practice guidelines and shares tips for working with this client group.

This course is also available to be booked for staff teams of up to 20 people, to be delivered online "in-house" in live interactive sessions on dates to suit your organisation. This course can booked to be delivered in-person (subject to government advice).
