This course will explore how trauma can create self-harming behaviour in a person as a way of managing emotional distress, and look at how to support people away from self-harming to alternative ways of managing their emotions.
As well as defining self-harm and the reasons why someone may self-harm, we will look at managing risk in a person-centred way, and the biases we may hold that can hinder our interventions with clients who self-harm.
We will explore strategies to help a person find alternative ways to manage their distress, whilst being mindful of our role remit. We will also discuss how staff can take care of themselves and manage their wellbeing.
