This course aims to develop emotional resilience amongst staff by exploring stress, compassion fatigue, burnout and vicarious trauma, and develop strategies and techniques for managing self-care and emotional wellbeing.

Who is this course for?

Frontline workers and managers within homelessness and supported housing settings.

What will you learn?

Day One: Exploring Stress, Compassion Fatigue and Vicarious Trauma

At the end of this day, participants will be able to:

  • Map external stressors and internal belief systems and cognitive patterns that impact on stress
  • ​Explain the psychological and physiological symptoms and impact of stress
  • Define Compassion Fatigue, Burn Out and Vicarious Trauma
  • Identify how and why Compassion Fatigue, Burnout and Vicarious Trauma happen
  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of Compassion Fatigue, Burn Out and Vicarious Trauma
  • Consider systematic influences and how these can impact on an individual experience of Compassion Fatigue, Burn Out and Vicarious Trauma.

Day Two: Managing Wellbeing

At the end of this day, participants will be able to:

  • Recognise roles and responsibilities for staff self-care 
  • Apply effective professional boundary setting
  • Practice Cogniive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and grounding techniques for managing stress and anxiety 
  • Identify components of emotional wellbeing using the PERMA (Positive emotions; Engagement; Relationships; Meaning; Achievement) Model (Seligman) and develop a bespoke self-care strategy.

Duration and costs

Face to face: Two-day course that can be split over a two week period
Online: Three 1.5hr modules

This course can be booked for a team of up to 16 for face to face training or up to 20 for online training
